Health Issues
Male Hormone Replacement
Hormone replacement for men has long been an interest and a passion of mine. The average life expectancy of a man at the turn of the 20th century was 39 years. For thousands of years our bodies have been programmed to run for about four decades. We grow for 18-20 years, have our testosterone surge in our late teens and early 20’s, reproduce and then live for twenty years more to ensure the survival of our offspring, watching all the while as our testosterone dwindles. It is only in the last 100 years have we come to expect men to live into their 8th and 9th decades and beyond. Let’s use an automobile analogy. Cars are designed to last a fixed period of time. We marvel at older automobiles that are still on the road. We are shocked if they are actually on the highway! Our vehicle is the body and it was designed to last about 40 years. How can we suddenly expect it to last twice that time? Fortunately, some aspects of the body accommodate readily to the increase life expectancy. Others however may not and oftentimes the male hormone balance falls into this category. This is where science and a more holistic approach to health can work together to combat this loss of testosterone and to improve the quality and quantity of a man’s life.
A Focus on Combating Aging
“Anti-aging medicine” has gotten a bad rap with the term often being used by charlatans to promote unproven therapies. I believe however that much of what I do in my work with my patients qualifies as anti-aging medicine. Good nutrition, regular exercise, taking care of minor problems before they become major ones…all of these enhance the duration and the quality of a person’s life. In addition, there are many therapies and medications in the anti-aging arena that have been well studied and many have certainly proven to be effective in lessening the physical and mental effects of aging. These are the anti-aging therapies that I focus on in my practice and this is again where science and a focus on wellness can combine to attenuate the aging process and improve the quality of our lives.
